- Look behind you before you signal for a left or right turn, signal in good time and never change lanes without signaling.
- When you reach the junction, stop. Look left and right. Then look left again.
- When it is safe to go you should signal again and move off.
- Never wear an MP3 Player or iPod or use your mobile phone while cycling.
- Keep well back from motor vehicles (at least 5 bicycle lengths) in case they break.
- Show drivers what you plan to do. Try to get eye contact. Always look and signal before you start, stop or turn.
- Pedestrians expect right of way on footpaths so always give way to pedestrians. Remember pedestrians may not always hear cyclists come up behind them so give pedestrians plenty of clearance and be prepared for them to change directions suddenly.
- Never cycle up on to a footpath unless it is completely flush with the road. If there is any lip at all the front wheel of the bike will hit the kerb and knock you off imediately. Dismount your bike and lift the wheel on to the footpath.
- Consistently listen for motor vehicles coming from behind and prepare to have them pass you.
- Cycle with caution over wet or gravelly patches or grassed areas and avoid braking on these surfaces as they may be slippery and cause a fall.
- Avoid pot holes and grates.
- When riding in a group be mindful of the cyclist in front of you and to avoid collision allow plenty of room for them to break suddenly.
- Use both brakes at the same time gently never stab at them and never pull the front brake on its own.
